ISLAMABAD (PEN) : The Islamabad High Court (IHC) has taken action on a contempt petition filed by the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) regarding the denial of permission to hold a rally in Islamabad. The court issued a notice to the Deputy Commissioner (DC) Islamabad, directing them to submit a reply by Tuesday (February 28).
The dispute arose after the Islamabad district administration rejected PTI’s application to hold a public rally, citing security concerns. Despite the IHC’s directive for the DC to decide on the application, it was ultimately rejected due to the prevailing law and order situation.
The PTI, dissatisfied with this decision, has taken legal action, seeking redress through the court. This development underscores the ongoing tension between the PTI and the authorities over the right to assembly and protest, particularly in light of recent elections and allegations of vote rigging.
The matter will now be subject to legal scrutiny, with the IHC expected to adjudicate on whether the rejection of PTI’s rally application constitutes contempt of court. The outcome of this case will have implications for the exercise of political rights and freedoms of assembly in Pakistan’s capital.
