ISLAMABAD (PEN) : Former finance minister Miftah Ismail has announced the launch of a new political party called Awaam Pakistan, led by former Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi. The party is set to be inaugurated in Islamabad on July 6, as revealed in a statement to Geo News. Ismail highlighted that the core objective of Awaam Pakistan is to reform the governance system of Pakistan, emphasizing the inclusion of the public in decision-making processes.
The party has attracted several prominent figures from the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), including Sardar Mehtab Ahmed Khan Abbasi, Javed Abbasi, Syed Zaeem Hussain Qadri, Rana Zahid Tauseef, Zahid Binnouri, and Sardar Anwar Soomro. Additionally, Dr. Zafar Mirza and Sheikh Salahuddin are also set to join.
Shahid Khaqan Abbasi, who served as Prime Minister from August 2017 to May 2018, submitted the necessary documents for party registration to the Election Commission of Pakistan two months ago. He intends to contest future elections under the banner of Awaam Pakistan.
This announcement comes amid a trend of prominent politicians forming new parties in Pakistan, including figures from the ruling Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) such as Jahangir Tareen and Pervez Khattak establishing their own political entities last year.
