PTI leader Asad Qaiser has raised concerns over the effectiveness of previous military operations in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), questioning their outcomes and suggesting a review of their success. He highlighted that during a recent meeting of the Central Apex Committee on National Action Plan (NAP), KP Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur did not mention any discussions about a new comprehensive military operation named Azm-e-Istehkam aimed at combating militancy.
Qaiser disclosed that discussions during the meeting centered on routine counter-terrorism actions but did not include plans for a full-scale operation. This comes amidst PTI’s insistence that any major military operation must first be presented to Parliament for approval and oversight.
PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar Khan reiterated this stance in Parliament, emphasizing the constitutional role of lawmakers in decision-making regarding military operations. He stressed that parliamentary consensus should precede such operations, regardless of their location or scope.
Meanwhile, Defence Minister Khawaja Asif criticized PTI’s opposition to the operation, accusing them of aligning with terrorist elements. Asif asserted that decisions were made transparently with the participation of KP’s chief executive, who also heads PTI in the province.
Looking ahead, Qaiser emphasized the need for broader consultation involving Pashtun community leaders and other political stakeholders to ensure comprehensive discussions on regional stability and security measures. He underlined Parliament’s role in formulating policies that address both domestic security needs and international concerns, including those raised by China.
Regarding China’s interests and reservations, Qaiser stressed the importance of addressing these through parliamentary deliberations, affirming Parliament’s responsibility in shaping policies that maintain peace and security while safeguarding foreign interests.
