ISLAMABAD (PEN) : The Italy-Pakistan K2 Jubilee Expedition team, comprising women climbers from both nations, has commenced their journey from the K2 base camp with a significant display of unity and achievement. Upon reaching the base camp, the team proudly raised the flags of Pakistan, Italy, and the Olympics, accompanied by the recitation of Pakistan’s national anthem.
Samina Baig, renowned as the first Pakistani woman to summit K2, leads the expedition, which includes four climbers from each country. Prior to their departure, the team members underwent rigorous fitness assessments in Italy, ensuring they were prepared mentally, physically, and emotionally for the challenges ahead.
This expedition holds special significance as it coincides with the 70th anniversary of the first successful summit of K2. Italian mountaineer Agostino da Polenza praised the team for their resilience and positive spirits during their initial journey to the base camp.
Reflecting on the expedition’s importance, Samina Baig expressed her joy at leading such a meaningful endeavor, particularly emphasizing the inclusion of Pakistani women climbers in this historic expedition to K2, a mountain revered by climbers worldwide.
