ISLAMABAD (PEN) : MQM leader Mustafa Kamal highlighted the severe crisis in the power sector, stating it has become an even bigger issue than terrorism. He urged the current government to declare an emergency to address the problem.
Kamal called on the government to summon the 40 independent power producers (IPPs) and frankly inform them, “We cannot continue with these agreements.” He pointed out the discrepancy between the NEPRA cost of 8.50 rupees per unit of electricity and the actual bills issued at 34 rupees per unit.
Expressing a sense of urgency and desperation, Kamal implored the government to appeal to the Chinese government and their companies for compassion. “Tell them, we are unable to implement the agreement,” he said, emphasizing the financial strain on the nation.
Kamal urged the government to engage in discussions with the power companies and convey the need to revisit and renegotiate the entire agreement. He emphasized the importance of transparency and fairness in these agreements to alleviate the burden on the public and ensure a sustainable energy future for Pakistan.
His passionate plea reflects the widespread frustration and urgency felt by many who are struggling with exorbitant electricity costs and a power sector in crisis.
