ISLAMABAD (PEN) : In Islamabad , authorities have taken significant measures to secure the Red Zone by deploying containers in anticipation of today’s planned sit-in by Jamaat-i-Islami (JI) at D-Chowk and a nationwide protest by Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI). Key intersections, including D Chowk, Nadra Chowk, and Sarina Chowk, have been blocked off with containers to prevent access and manage the expected gatherings.
Jamaat-i-Islami is preparing for its sit-in at D-Chowk, while Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has organized protests across the country to address rising electricity bills and increasing inflation. In response to these planned events, both the federal and Punjab governments have imposed Section 144, effective from July 26 to July 28, which bans rallies, sit-ins, and public gatherings. This decision is aimed at mitigating potential security risks, as authorities are concerned that public gatherings could be vulnerable to terrorism threats.
The Home Department’s notification highlights the security concerns and the need to prevent large gatherings that could be targeted by militants.
Meanwhile, JI Secretary General Ameerul Azeem has accused the police of conducting raids on the homes of JI leaders in several cities. He claims that these raids are an attempt to disrupt the planned demonstrations and has reported multiple incidents of police actions, including arrests and the mistreatment of women activists. These actions have intensified tensions, as JI leaders and supporters prepare to demonstrate amidst growing concerns over civil liberties and public safety.
The situation reflects a broader struggle between political groups and government authorities, with the security measures and allegations of police overreach adding to the complexity and gravity of the current political climate in Pakistan.
