ISLAMABAD (PEN) : Tensions have escalated ahead of the Khalistan Referendum voting in Calgary, with Pro-Khalistan Sikhs For Justice leader Gurpatwant Singh Pannun accusing Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi of inciting hate against Sikhs both directly and through allies. As thousands prepare to vote on Punjab’s potential separation from India, the Indian government has expressed concern.
Pannun, who survived an assassination attempt by Indian state agents last year, has criticized Canadian MP Chandra Arya for allegedly supporting anti-Sikh sentiments. Arya’s statements, which highlighted vandalism and controversial celebrations by Khalistan supporters, have further inflamed the situation.
Pannun has responded, calling for Arya’s disqualification and accusing him of aligning with Modi’s agenda, which Pannun claims undermines Canadian democratic values. The Khalistan Referendum, organized by the independent Punjab Referendum Commission, continues to draw international attention, reflecting deepening divides and ongoing geopolitical tensions.
