ISLAMABAD (PEN) : In a special session on Monday (today), the political committee of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) announced its decision to formally join the Judicial Commission of Pakistan (JCP).
The declaration stated, “It is unanimously decided that PTI members from both houses will be nominated to join the JCP.” During the meeting, sources revealed that members received a detailed briefing regarding a letter from the National Assembly speaker, which called for two opposition members to be nominated for the JCP.
The JCP has the important responsibility of nominating judges for the high courts, the Supreme Court, and the Federal Sharia Court. It will also oversee the performance of judges and provide annual reports on their work.
The 13-member commission will be tasked with forming benches in both the Supreme Court and high courts, requiring a simple majority of its members to make decisions.
While the committee decided to join the JCP, it also reaffirmed its commitment to its official stance against the 26th amendment, standing firm on its principles amidst ongoing political discussions.
