ISLAMABAD (PEN) : Chairman of the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP), Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, has firmly stated that Pakistan cannot endure the repercussions of another military dictatorship.
Speaking at the Benazir Bhutto Memorial Lecture hosted by the Oxford University Union, Bilawal underscored the importance of democracy, which he described as the “best revenge”—a principle his late mother, Benazir Bhutto, instilled in him. The PPP leader emphasized that his mother, a fearless political figure, had taught him that democracy was the true path, despite facing grave challenges as a woman in leadership.
*Championing Women in Leadership*
Bilawal acknowledged the progress women in Pakistan have made in leadership roles, pointing out that Benazir Bhutto’s pioneering work for female empowerment has inspired the election of the current female chief minister of Punjab. He emphasized that his mother’s life was dedicated to creating a better future for Pakistan, despite the numerous assassination attempts she faced.
*Democracy as Pakistan’s Future*
Highlighting Pakistan’s future, Bilawal reiterated that it hinges on upholding the constitution, an independent judiciary, and a free press. He took aim at the National Accountability Bureau (NAB), calling its laws “draconian” and reaffirming PPP’s firm opposition to them.
The PPP chairman also raised concerns about the deteriorating security situation in Balochistan, urging that it be addressed immediately. On national defense, Bilawal emphasized that Pakistan’s nuclear assets are non-negotiable, insisting that no external pressure could alter the country’s stance.
*Sindh’s Development Under PPP*
Bilawal also pointed to the strides made in Sindh under PPP governance, particularly in healthcare. He described the progress made in the province as a model that could be replicated across the country.
