ISLAMABAD (PEN) : U.S. President Donald Trump announced that he intends to speak with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Tuesday to explore potential solutions to end the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. The announcement follows productive discussions between U.S. and Russian officials in Moscow.
In remarks made to reporters aboard Air Force One, Trump confirmed that discussions regarding the war have made significant progress. “I’ll be speaking to President Putin on Tuesday. A lot of work has been done over the weekend,” Trump said. He expressed optimism about the potential for peace, stating, “We want to see if we can bring that war to an end. Maybe we can, maybe we can’t, but I think we have a very good chance.”
Trump’s comments come as part of efforts to secure Putin’s backing for a proposed 30-day ceasefire that Ukraine agreed to last week. Despite ongoing aerial strikes and Russia’s continued efforts to push Ukrainian forces from their positions in Kursk, Trump remains hopeful about the ceasefire prospects.
When pressed on the specifics of the ceasefire negotiations, Trump indicated that discussions would involve territorial matters and infrastructure, such as land and power plants. “We’ll be talking about land. We’ll be talking about power plants,” he said, adding that both Russia and Ukraine have already initiated conversations regarding the division of certain assets.
Trump’s stance on Russia has significantly shifted U.S. foreign policy closer to Moscow, and his more favorable view of Putin contrasts with his previous dealings with Ukraine. Last month, Trump’s meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky ended abruptly, with the Ukrainian leader leaving the White House earlier than planned.
The current diplomatic efforts are now placing additional pressure on Russia to meet U.S. demands, with the ceasefire proposal adding a new layer of complexity to an already delicate situation. The coming conversation between Trump and Putin could play a pivotal role in the direction of peace talks.
