ISLAMABAD (PEN) : A promising young Chinese footballer, Guo Jiaxuan, tragically passed away following a severe head injury sustained during a training match in Spain. The incident occurred last month while Guo was participating in a match between the Beijing men’s U-20 team and Spanish club RC Alcobendas in Madrid.
Guo, a defender who had represented China’s U-17 team in 2023 and had previously played for the Beijing Guoan U-19 team, fell into a coma after the accident. He was later transferred to China for further medical care after being declared brain dead by a hospital in Spain.
The 18-year-old’s condition deteriorated in the days following his transfer, and he died on Wednesday evening at Beijing Tiantan Hospital, just one day shy of his 19th birthday. His family had expressed their sadness, with his brother posting a black-and-white photo of Guo on social media, writing: “He’ll forever be frozen on the last day of his 18th year.”
Guo’s death has shocked the football community, as he was widely regarded as a promising talent. He had been selected for the FC Bayern World Squad, a program aimed at discovering global football prospects. His potential had made him a rising star in Chinese football, and his untimely passing has left a void in the sport.
Family Seeks Answers
The circumstances surrounding Guo’s injury remain unclear, and his family has called for transparency. They have requested video footage of the training match, as well as details regarding his medical treatment before arriving at the hospital. Guo’s family is also seeking information about his insurance coverage in relation to the incident.
On social media, Guo’s brother voiced the family’s desire for justice, stating that they simply wanted “the truth” behind the events that led to the tragedy.
The Beijing Football Association issued a statement in February expressing their deep sorrow over the incident. The association vowed to assist with the ongoing investigation and provide support for the family as they seek answers.
A Tragic Loss
Guo’s death marks a heartbreaking moment for his family, the Chinese football community, and his teammates. As the investigation continues, many will remember him not only for his football potential but also for the bright future that was tragically cut short.
