ISLAMABAD (PEN) : Bangladesh’s star all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan has successfully cleared his bowling action test after several failed attempts in the past. The 37-year-old, who had previously faced suspensions following the disapproval of his action, has now regained approval from cricket authorities after multiple reassessments.
Bowling Action Suspension and Reassessments
Shakib’s bowling action first came under scrutiny in September 2024, during a match for Surrey against Somerset in the County Championship. His action was reported and subsequently deemed illegal by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB). This led to a suspension, halting his participation in official matches.
Since then, Shakib attempted to rectify his action, undergoing multiple assessments in England and India, but failed to pass on two occasions. However, his persistence finally paid off in his most recent attempt, where he successfully cleared the test.
Challenges and Discontent with Communication
In a statement, Shakib shared his frustrations with the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) over the lack of effective communication regarding his situation. “I don’t have any complaints, but if the communication was better, I would have been happier,” he remarked. Shakib had also sought assistance from his childhood mentor Mohammad Salahuddin, but his request was denied by the BCB, which he believes affected his chances of clearing the test sooner.
Support from Mentor and Optimism for the Future
Throughout his suspension, Shakib worked with his close friend and former Under-19 teammate, Sirajullah Khadem, in England to make adjustments to his action. Khadem believes that fatigue may have contributed to the issue in the first place. “I think he was reported because he bowled a lot during that match. When you push yourself too much, even small changes in your action can occur, which could lead to problems,” Khadem explained.
Despite the setbacks, Khadem is optimistic about Shakib’s future. “He’s looking sharp now, and it seems like he’s regained all his skills,” he added, expressing confidence that the all-rounder will make a strong return to international cricket.
With his bowling action now cleared, Shakib is expected to rejoin the national squad and continue his contributions to Bangladesh’s cricketing success.
