ISLAMABAD (PEN) : There has been no decision made by the Trump administration regarding a potential travel ban for Pakistani citizens, according to a statement from a US State Department official. The remarks were made by Margaret McLeod, the Urdu-language spokesperson for the US Ministry of Foreign Affairs, who addressed the issue during a recent briefing.
Visa Program Review Underway
McLeod clarified that, although no travel ban has been imposed, the Trump administration is currently reviewing the US visa program. This review is part of a broader executive order issued by President Trump on January 20. McLeod explained that the order was primarily designed to enhance national security by safeguarding the United States from potential threats posed by foreign terrorists.
“The presidential order aims to reassess the US visa program, and the review is ongoing,” she said. “As part of the process, there will be a thorough evaluation of various countries’ visa procedures.”
Ongoing Cooperation Between the US and Pakistan
The US official also emphasized the positive relationship between the United States and Pakistan. McLeod highlighted President Trump’s appreciation for Pakistan’s cooperation, noting that it was acknowledged during his State of the Union address.
“Pakistanis living in the United States are a vital part of our society,” McLeod said, stressing that the US values the contributions of the Pakistani community.
Importance of Correct Documentation
McLeod reiterated the importance of providing accurate information when applying for US visas. She stated that those intending to travel to the US must ensure that all documents are correct and truthful. Individuals who attempt to enter the country illegally could face legal consequences.
“We are working closely with Pakistan in exchanging information about visa restrictions and other related matters,” McLeod added.
The ongoing review of the visa program and discussions with Pakistan indicate a continuing focus on national security while maintaining strong ties with key international partners. However, as of now, no concrete decision has been made regarding a travel ban.
