ISLAMABAD (PEN) : Pakistan has called on the United Nations to address the Kashmir issue in accordance with its established resolutions, emphasizing that this is essential for ensuring lasting regional peace. The appeal was made by Tariq Fatemi, Special Assistant to the Prime Minister, during a debate at the UN Security Council.
Kashmiris’ Right to Self-Determination
Fatemi reminded the international community that the people of Kashmir were promised the right to self-determination under UN resolutions, a commitment that remains unfulfilled despite the passage of several decades. He stressed that the ongoing denial of this right by India continues to exacerbate the situation.
“The Security Council has a critical responsibility to uphold the right of the Kashmiri people to determine their own future,” Fatemi stated during his address.
Human Rights Concerns in Indian-Occupied Kashmir
The Special Assistant further highlighted the grave human rights violations occurring in Indian-occupied Kashmir, where the local population faces continuous suppression and cruelty at the hands of Indian military forces. Fatemi condemned these actions and called for the international community to take decisive steps in addressing the situation.
Regional Peace Hinges on Kashmir Resolution
In his remarks, Fatemi reiterated that peace in South Asia cannot be achieved without addressing the Kashmir dispute. He stressed that a resolution must align with the wishes and aspirations of the Kashmiri people, as outlined in the UN’s resolutions. Until then, tensions in the region are likely to persist.
“True regional peace can only be realized when the Kashmir dispute is resolved in accordance with the aspirations of the Kashmiri people,” he concluded.
Pakistan’s call for a resolution to the Kashmir issue underscores the ongoing challenges in the region and the need for the global community to take meaningful action in addressing this long-standing dispute.
