ISLAMABAD (PEN) : Pakistan’s ties with the United States are progressing steadily, with mutual trust, respect, and shared interests serving as the foundation of the partnership, stated Chairman of the Senate, Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani, during a meeting with Natalie Baker, the Chargé d’Affaires of the US Embassy, on Monday.
Gilani highlighted that the relationship between the two countries, considered an important pillar of Pakistan’s foreign policy, is on an upward trajectory. He stressed the importance of sustaining this positive momentum, especially through enhanced cooperation in various sectors, to further strengthen bilateral ties.
Focus on Strengthening Bilateral Relations
The Chairman emphasized the need to deepen and broaden the relationship, underlining the value of increased people-to-people interactions and engagement across political, parliamentary, educational, cultural, and business spheres. He underscored that Pakistan aims to encourage more US companies to explore new investment opportunities, particularly as the United States remains Pakistan’s largest export market.
“Mutual trust and respect should define the principles of our relationship. We are eager to expand our cooperation with a particular focus on trade and business collaboration,” Gilani stated.
Regional Cooperation and Multilateral Interests
Gilani also touched upon regional dynamics, expressing Pakistan’s commitment to fostering better relationships with neighboring countries despite ongoing bilateral challenges. Reflecting on his tenure as Prime Minister, he recalled productive discussions with US Presidents George W. Bush and Barack Obama, which helped to solidify Pakistan-US relations.
Gilani acknowledged the significant contributions of the United States as a vital economic and development partner. He further emphasized the need for a diversified approach to collaboration, particularly in areas like climate change, energy transition, water management, and biodiversity conservation.
Defense Ties and Future Opportunities
The Chairman also noted the strong defense partnership between Pakistan and the United States, particularly during the global war on terror. He called for continued exploration of new opportunities in trade, investment, and defense to promote growth and innovation for both nations.
Gilani also expressed optimism about the future of bilateral relations under the current US administration, which could further enhance cooperation. He appreciated the US’s support in humanitarian efforts, especially Pakistan’s flood relief operations.
Role of Pakistani Diaspora and Educational Exchanges
The vibrant Pakistani diaspora in the United States was also recognized by Gilani, with an emphasis on the importance of educational exchanges in fostering mutual understanding between the two nations.
A Commitment to Constructive Engagement
Concluding the meeting, Gilani reiterated Pakistan’s commitment to constructive engagement with the US, expressing hope that diplomatic collaboration will continue to grow in areas of mutual interest. He also looked forward to deeper cooperation in emerging sectors and new fields of shared significance.
