ISLAMABAD (PEN) : Ahmad Nawaz, a survivor of the tragic Army Public School (APS) attack in 2014, has been awarded the British Empire Medal by His Majesty King Charles III. The honor recognizes Nawaz’s unwavering commitment to youth empowerment and advocacy for global youth struggles.
The award is a significant acknowledgment of Nawaz’s journey, which has inspired many around the world. Taking to X (formerly Twitter), Nawaz expressed his gratitude for the recognition and thanked his friends and supporters. He also shared his excitement for an upcoming meeting with King Charles III at Buckingham Palace this summer, where he hopes to continue his advocacy for young people facing challenges across the globe.
A Decade of Resilience
Ahmad Nawaz’s story of survival and resilience continues to captivate hearts. On December 16, 2014, he was among the few fortunate enough to survive the brutal APS attack in Peshawar, Pakistan, which claimed the lives of over 150 students, teachers, and staff members. Nawaz, who was shot multiple times, including in his arms and chest, has shown remarkable strength in the years following the attack.
Nawaz’s courage and indomitable spirit were further showcased in 2022 when he became the youngest president of the Oxford Union, a prestigious position at the University of Oxford with a history dating back to 1825. His election marked a pivotal moment in his recovery and his drive to make a positive impact on the global stage.

Born in Peshawar, Nawaz has consistently used his platform to inspire others, particularly youth facing adversity. His time at Oxford University, where he studied Philosophy and Theology, was marked by his determination to overcome personal tragedy and help others.

Securing 517 votes, he triumphed over two other candidates, Anjali Ramanathan (422 votes) and Rachel Ojo (187 votes), solidifying his position as a young leader with a global perspective.
