ISLAMABAD (PEN) : Pakistan and China are currently engaged in talks to bolster the security of Chinese nationals working in Pakistan, according to Islamabad’s ambassador to Beijing, Khalil Hashmi. The discussions are focused on ensuring the safety of thousands of Chinese citizens employed in various sectors within Pakistan, particularly in light of recent security concerns.
Speaking at the Boao Forum in Hainan province, Ambassador Hashmi emphasized that ensuring the protection of Chinese nationals is Pakistan’s “national responsibility.” He reassured the media that Pakistan is taking all possible measures to address these concerns, stating, “We are doing everything possible” to guarantee their safety.
Joint Efforts and Information Sharing
Hashmi highlighted the ongoing collaboration between the two countries, especially in terms of information sharing and developing standard operating procedures for the safety of Chinese nationals. He stated, “We keep our Chinese friends informed of the steps that we are taking, so it’s a work in progress.”
The talks come amid growing concerns over the security of Chinese nationals in Pakistan, especially following a deadly bombing at Karachi’s airport in October 2024, which claimed the lives of two Chinese engineers returning to work at a local power plant. Beijing has expressed frustration over the increasing attacks and has urged Pakistan to allow Chinese security personnel to assist in protecting their citizens working there.
A Complex Security Environment
Ambassador Hashmi acknowledged the complexities of the security situation, noting that Pakistan’s security forces are fully equipped to address the threats posed by terrorist groups. “It’s a complex security environment. We have the capability to resolve, to counter, and to defeat these terrorist forces,” he affirmed.
Pakistan’s efforts to secure Chinese nationals working on various infrastructure projects, particularly under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) initiative, are central to the ongoing talks. The country’s commitment to addressing these security issues is seen as a crucial part of maintaining and strengthening its relationship with China, which remains a key ally and trade partner.
As the discussions between Pakistan and China continue, both nations are working towards ensuring that the necessary security protocols are in place to safeguard Chinese nationals and foster greater bilateral cooperation.
