ISLAMABAD (PEN) : Pakistan’s sesame seed exports to China have experienced a remarkable surge of nearly 180% in the first two months of 2025, according to recent data from the General Administration of Customs. Exports reached 22,740 metric tons, valued at $28.27 million, compared to 5,997 metric tons worth $10.10 million in the same period last year.
Key Drivers of Export Growth
Trade and Investment Counsellor Ghulam Qadir attributes this sharp rise to several key factors, including improved quality standards, streamlined trade processes, and a growing demand for sesame seeds in China. Pakistan’s strengthened position in the Chinese market, bolstered by the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), has further facilitated trade and agricultural cooperation between the two nations.
Qadir emphasized that Pakistan’s favorable climatic conditions for sesame cultivation and advancements in farming techniques have made the country a reliable source of high-quality sesame seeds. These factors, combined with enhanced bilateral trade ties under CPEC, have played a significant role in driving export growth.
Pakistan’s Growing Role in the Global Sesame Market
Pakistan is now one of the top exporters of sesame seeds to China, which is the world’s largest importer of the commodity. The significant increase in exports positions Pakistan well to capitalize on China’s expanding food industry, where sesame-based products like oil, snacks, and confectionery are in high demand.
Rakesh Pal, a prominent exporter of sesame seeds from Pakistan to China, highlighted that the growth in exports is a result of Pakistan’s commitment to improving its agricultural exports. This includes meeting international quality standards and gaining better access to key markets, such as China.
Outlook for Future Growth
Industry experts predict continued growth in sesame seed exports to China, driven by the increasing demand for sesame products. This trend aligns with broader efforts to strengthen agricultural cooperation between Pakistan and China, further deepening their economic ties.
The surge in sesame seed exports is just one example of how Pakistan is leveraging its agricultural strengths to expand its footprint in the global market. With China’s growing preference for high-quality agricultural imports, the future looks promising for Pakistani farmers and exporters in the sesame sector.
Conclusion
The rapid rise in Pakistan’s sesame seed exports to China highlights the potential for further growth in agricultural trade, driven by quality improvements and stronger bilateral ties. As Pakistan continues to meet the rising demand for sesame products, this growth will not only benefit farmers and exporters but also strengthen the economic partnership between Pakistan and China.
