ISLAMABAD (PEN) : The Jaffar Express, a vital rail link connecting the provinces of Pakistan, has resumed operations 16 days after it was targeted in a deadly terrorist attack near Bolan, Balochistan. The passenger train departed from Peshawar Cantonment Railway Station on Thursday, marking its first journey since the tragic incident on March 11.
A Long-Awaited Return
The Jaffar Express, the only train that passes through all four provinces of Pakistan, will cover a 34-hour journey to reach Quetta by Friday evening. The train departed with 280 passengers, including 28 who boarded from Peshawar. The service had been suspended following the attack that resulted in the tragic deaths of 26 passengers.
Terrorist Attack on March 11
The Jaffar Express was ambushed by militants from the outlawed Baloch Liberation Army (BLA) near a mountain pass in the Bolan district. The terrorists blew up the train tracks, trapping over 440 passengers. After a tense standoff, security forces launched an operation that resulted in the death of all 33 attackers and the rescue of the remaining passengers. Tragically, 26 passengers lost their lives in the attack, with some reports suggesting a higher casualty count. Four security personnel also embraced martyrdom during the operation.
Minister Muqam’s Statement
At the ceremony marking the train’s departure, Federal Minister Amir Muqam emphasized that restoring the Jaffar Express service was a priority for Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. He commended the efforts of the security forces in ensuring the safety of the passengers and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to securing the country against terrorist threats.
“Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Chief of Army Staff General Asim Munir are determined to ensure the safety and security of Pakistan,” Muqam stated. “The nefarious intentions of the terrorists will be thwarted. We will continue our battle against terrorism until it is eradicated.”
Security Enhancements
The tragic attack has prompted the authorities to implement heightened security measures for the Jaffar Express. The train, which is critical for connecting diverse regions of the country, now operates under strict oversight to ensure the safety of its passengers.
Continuing the Fight Against Terrorism
Minister Muqam also addressed the broader national issue of terrorism, calling for unity in the fight against this scourge. “Terrorism is a national problem, and every citizen must join hands to defeat it,” he said, highlighting the role of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s residents in the ongoing battle against extremists.
In addition, he mentioned the government’s careful plans regarding the repatriation of Afghan refugees, stating it would proceed with caution while ensuring national security.
Regional and International Reactions
In the aftermath of the attack, Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) Director General Lt Gen Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry blamed India for sponsoring terrorism in Balochistan. He pointed out that the attack on the Jaffar Express was part of a broader strategy aimed at destabilizing the region. Gen Chaudhry further accused Indian media of spreading misinformation by using outdated footage to manipulate public opinion.
As the Jaffar Express resumes its journey, Pakistan continues to reinforce its commitment to fighting terrorism while ensuring the safety of its citizens and infrastructure.
