ISLAMABAD (PEN) : The ICC Champions Trophy 2025, jointly hosted by Pakistan and the United Arab Emirates, has shattered global viewership records, drawing an unprecedented 368 billion viewing minutes worldwide. According to an official statement released by the International Cricket Council (ICC), this marks a 19% increase compared to the previous edition in 2017 held in England and Wales.
Historic Tournament Returns to Pakistan After 29 Years
This year’s tournament was significant as it marked the return of an ICC event to Pakistani soil for the first time in nearly three decades. The last such occasion was during the 1996 Cricket World Cup. Pakistan showcased its readiness with major upgrades to its cricket infrastructure, including a revamped Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore, which hosted four key matches, including a semi-final. Karachi opened the tournament, while Rawalpindi also played a vital role in the successful hosting.
Record-Breaking Final Captivates Global Audience
The grand finale, held on March 9 in the UAE, featured a high-stakes clash between India and New Zealand. It became the most-watched Champions Trophy match in history, amassing 65.3 billion live viewing minutes—an astonishing 52.1% increase over the 2017 final between Pakistan and India.
Despite Pakistan’s early exit from the tournament, domestic viewership surged by 24%, underscoring the nation’s passionate support for cricket. Internationally, Australia also recorded a 65% increase in viewing hours, highlighting the growing global interest in the Champions Trophy format.
Strong Global Appeal and Broadcast Success
The ICC attributed the success to increased accessibility through digital streaming platforms and strong broadcast partnerships, which expanded the tournament’s reach across key markets.
In 2017, Pakistan clinched its maiden Champions Trophy title with a resounding 180-run victory over India. While this year’s squad did not replicate that success, the tournament reaffirmed Pakistan’s capability as a host and the enduring popularity of international cricket in the region.
