ISLAMABAD (PEN) : The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has issued a heatwave alert for Karachi as temperatures are expected to soar, reaching up to 40 degrees Celsius today.
The Met Office has forecasted “extremely hot and humid” conditions for the port city, with humidity levels likely to intensify the discomfort. This elevated moisture will cause the heat index — or the “feels-like” temperature — to register significantly higher than the actual mercury reading.
On Saturday, Karachi recorded a maximum temperature of 37.6°C, but with humidity factored in, the heat index was estimated to be 6 to 8 degrees above that mark.
Meteorologists have cautioned that such weather conditions may pose serious health risks, particularly affecting vulnerable groups including children, the elderly, and individuals with pre-existing medical conditions.
Citizens are advised to stay indoors during peak afternoon hours, maintain adequate hydration, and limit sun exposure to mitigate health hazards.
Authorities have been urged to implement precautionary measures by ensuring the availability of water and medical support in public spaces, especially during the hottest parts of the day.
