ISLAMABAD (PEN) : Maltese Prime Minister Robert Abela announced that Malta will formally recognise the State of Palestine next month, citing the escalating humanitarian disaster in Gaza as a key reason behind the decision.
Speaking at a political event, Abela emphasized the worsening conditions in the besieged Palestinian territory and announced the recognition would occur after a conference scheduled for June 20.
“We cannot close our eyes to this human tragedy that is getting worse every day,” the Prime Minister stated, referring to the ongoing Israeli bombardment of Gaza, which local health authorities report has resulted in nearly 54,000 Palestinian deaths, predominantly women and children.
Abela described Malta’s recognition of Palestine as a “moral responsibility” in the face of relentless violence and mounting civilian casualties since October 2023.
The Prime Minister also expressed deep sorrow over the recent killing of nine children belonging to Palestinian pediatrician Dr. Alaa Al-Najjar. Their home in Khan Younis was struck by an Israeli airstrike on Saturday, critically injuring Dr. Najjar’s husband and leaving only one child survivor.
In a gesture of solidarity, Abela said Malta is ready to welcome Dr. Al-Najjar and her family, reaffirming the country’s commitment to humanitarian principles.
Malta’s move follows similar recognitions by European nations including Spain, Ireland, and Norway, amid increasing international calls for a ceasefire and renewed efforts toward a two-state solution.
