ISLAMABAD (PEN) : Cristiano Ronaldo hinted at a potential departure from Saudi Arabian side Al Nassr after the conclusion of the Saudi Pro League, saying the “chapter is over” in a cryptic social media post.
The 40-year-old Portuguese star, who joined Al Nassr in late 2022 following his high-profile exit from Manchester United, shared a photo of himself in the club’s shirt alongside the caption: “This chapter is over. The story? Still being written. Grateful to all.”
Ronaldo’s current contract with Al Nassr expires this summer, and while there has been no official announcement regarding his future, his statement suggests a possible move away from the Riyadh-based club.
During his time with Al Nassr, Ronaldo has remained a central figure, scoring 24 goals this season to finish as the top scorer of the Saudi Pro League. However, despite his efforts, the club fell short of silverware — finishing third in the league and bowing out of the AFC Champions League at the semi-final stage against Japan’s Kawasaki Frontale.
Speculation over his next destination has intensified, particularly with the inaugural 32-team FIFA Club World Cup set to begin in the United States on June 14. Although Al Nassr did not qualify for the tournament, Ronaldo’s presence may still be felt, with FIFA President Gianni Infantino recently stating that discussions are underway that could see the five-time Ballon d’Or winner feature for one of the participating clubs.
“There are discussions with some clubs, so if any club is watching and is interested in hiring Ronaldo for the Club World Cup… who knows, who knows,” Infantino said during a conversation with American YouTuber IShowSpeed.
Ronaldo’s long-time rival Lionel Messi will be participating in the Club World Cup with Inter Miami, a storyline that could again ignite the famed rivalry should Ronaldo join another qualified side.
While Ronaldo had previously indicated that he might end his playing career at Al Nassr, the forward now appears to be keeping his options open as he nears the twilight of a decorated career spanning stints with Sporting Lisbon, Manchester United, Real Madrid, and Juventus.
The special Club World Cup transfer window runs from June 1 to June 10, allowing participating clubs to register new players. Whether Ronaldo will feature in the tournament — and in which shirt — remains to be seen.
