ISLAMABAD (PEN) : Conservative candidate Karol Nawrocki has narrowly clinched victory in Poland’s presidential run-off election, securing 50.89% of the vote against liberal opponent and Warsaw Mayor Rafał Trzaskowski, who earned 49.11%, according to the final vote count released by the Polish Electoral Commission.
Official Results Confirmed
The commission confirmed on Monday that 100% of the ballots had been counted, concluding one of the closest and most closely watched elections in recent Polish history. The official announcement is expected to be published later in the day.
Nawrocki, 42, is a historian and the former head of the Institute of National Remembrance. His campaign focused on strengthening national policies, emphasizing conservative economic and social reforms, and adopting a cautious approach to accepting refugees—particularly from war-torn Ukraine.
Presidency’s Strategic Role
Although legislative power in Poland primarily rests with parliament, the presidency holds significant influence, especially through the authority to veto bills. Nawrocki’s win is expected to shape upcoming legislative debates and Poland’s direction on EU relations and regional security matters.
Global Interest in Tight Race
The election drew considerable international attention due to Poland’s strategic role in Eastern Europe. Observers from the European Union, the United States, and neighboring countries, including Ukraine and Russia, closely monitored the contest as it unfolded.
Nawrocki’s eurosceptic stance and focus on Polish sovereignty have sparked both support and concern across the EU, where debates continue over cohesion and the future of European integration.
As Poland enters a new chapter under President-elect Nawrocki, political analysts are watching closely to see how his leadership will impact domestic policy, EU relations, and the broader geopolitical landscape in the region.
