ISLAMABAD (PEN) : Australian all-rounder Glenn Maxwell has officially retired from One Day International (ODI) cricket, closing a significant chapter in his career that included pivotal contributions to two World Cup triumphs.
The 36-year-old will continue to represent Australia in the T20 format, with a focus on the upcoming 2026 T20 World Cup scheduled to take place in India and Sri Lanka.
Stellar ODI Career Highlights
Maxwell debuted in ODIs in 2012 against Afghanistan and went on to play 149 matches. Over his ODI career, he amassed 3,990 runs at an average of 33.81 and maintained an impressive strike rate of 126.70 — the second-highest in ODI history. Among his four centuries stands his remarkable unbeaten 201 against Afghanistan at the 2023 World Cup, widely celebrated as one of the finest innings in the format’s history.
Beyond his batting, Maxwell took 77 wickets with his off-spin bowling and was known for his exceptional fielding, securing 91 catches during his ODI tenure.
Reasons Behind the Decision
Injuries have increasingly impacted Maxwell’s performance, influencing his decision to step away from the 50-over game.
“I felt like I was letting the team down a little bit with how the body was reacting,” Maxwell shared on the Final Word Podcast. “I had a good chat with George Bailey and told him I didn’t see myself making it to the 2027 World Cup. It’s time for someone else to make that position their own.”
Tributes from Cricket Australia
Cricket Australia CEO Todd Greenberg lauded Maxwell’s impact, calling him “one of the most exciting and influential” ODI cricketers in history. “Glenn’s ballistic batting lit up stadiums and inspired a generation,” Greenberg added.
George Bailey, Chair of Selectors, also praised Maxwell’s contributions: “Glenn will be remembered as one of the game’s most dynamic players. His natural talent, energy in the field, and passion for Australia have been exceptional.”
Maxwell’s retirement signals the end of an era in Australian ODI cricket, yet fans can anticipate his continued explosive performances in the T20 international arena.
