ISLAMABAD (PEN) : The National Cybercrime Investigation Agency has registered a case against Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Dr Shahbaz Gill under the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (PECA) 2016, following allegations of defamatory content posted on social media.
FIR Filed After Inquiry Into Online Allegations
The first information report (FIR) was lodged after former Lahore Police inspector Mazhar Iqbal filed a complaint, accusing Gill of posting “insulting, defamatory, and baseless allegations” online.
According to the FIR, the content published through Gill’s social media platforms allegedly targeted the former officer’s personal and professional character, causing reputational damage and distress to his family.
PECA Violations Cited in Ongoing Investigation
The agency conducted a preliminary inquiry and found that there was enough evidence to proceed with formal charges under PECA provisions. The complaint claims the material not only defamed the individual but also misled the public and was intended to damage the complainant’s public image.
Inspector Iqbal further requested that the contentious material be removed from all digital platforms to prevent further harm.
The cybercrime agency is now moving forward with legal proceedings, in accordance with PECA’s guidelines on electronic defamation and online harassment.
