ISLAMABAD (PEN) : Pakistan has expressed strong condemnation following the United States’ veto of a United Nations Security Council resolution that called for an immediate and permanent ceasefire in Gaza, warning that the decision sends a “dangerous message” to the international community.
The resolution, which was supported by all ten elected members of the Security Council, failed to pass after the U.S. exercised its veto power during Wednesday’s session.
Pakistan Denounces Veto as “Historic Failure”
Speaking at the session, Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Asim Iftikhar, described the situation in Gaza as “worse than hell” and criticized the Security Council’s inability to act.
“More than 54,000 Palestinians have been martyred in Gaza. This is not a humanitarian issue, but a catastrophe for humanity,” Iftikhar stated.
He went on to accuse Israel of consistently violating international law and attempting to forcibly remove Palestinians from their homeland.
“Israel is constantly violating international laws and seeking to expel the Palestinians from their own land,” he said. “Pakistan will continue to fully support the Palestinian people.”
Pakistan Vows Continued Support for Gaza
Ambassador Iftikhar emphasized that Pakistan would persist in advocating for humanitarian relief in Gaza, particularly the delivery of essential aid.
“Pakistan will always raise its voice for the provision of food in Gaza,” he said, adding that the international community’s failure to reach a ceasefire agreement would be remembered as a dark moment in history.
U.S. Stands Firm Behind Israel
The U.S. defended its veto, arguing that the resolution did not adequately address Israel’s right to defend itself from Hamas. Washington reiterated that any action perceived as undermining Israeli security is unacceptable.
“It is Israel’s right to defeat Hamas and prevent it from becoming a threat again,” a U.S. representative said.
The veto comes amid escalating violence and worsening humanitarian conditions in Gaza, as Israeli military operations continue and aid access remains limited.
