ISLAMABAD (PEN) : The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has forecast an intense heatwave across the country during the upcoming Eid holidays, urging the public to take precautionary measures, particularly vulnerable groups such as children, the elderly, and women.
Temperature to Soar Well Above Seasonal Norms
According to the PMD’s advisory issued Thursday, regions in northern Pakistan are likely to experience temperatures up to 7°C above normal, while southern areas could see temperatures ranging from 4°C to 6°C higher than average. The elevated temperatures are expected to persist until at least June 12.
“The general public is advised to avoid direct sun exposure, remain indoors during peak heat hours, and increase fluid intake to prevent dehydration,” the advisory stated.
Health and Environmental Risks Highlighted
The PMD warned that prolonged exposure to extreme heat can lead to heatstroke and other health complications. The advisory emphasized the importance of protective measures for high-risk groups.
In addition to health concerns, the department also highlighted environmental risks, particularly in the country’s northern mountainous regions.
“The high temperatures could accelerate glacier melt, which may affect downstream water flows,” the PMD cautioned, adding that authorities should monitor these developments closely to manage potential water-related hazards.
Public Urged to Stay Informed
Citizens are encouraged to stay updated through official PMD bulletins and follow safety guidelines during outdoor activities. Local authorities have also been advised to make necessary preparations to cope with the expected heatwave conditions.
