ISLAMABAD (PEN) : The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has issued a weather advisory predicting predominantly hot and dry conditions across most of the country for the next 24 hours, with exceptions in certain northern areas.
Nationwide Heatwave Expected
According to the PMD, a high-pressure system in the upper atmosphere is dominating the region, leading to persistent hot and dry weather conditions. This pattern is anticipated to continue for the next four to five days. Continental air is prevailing over most parts of the country, contributing to the elevated temperatures.
In southern Punjab and Sindh, the weather is expected to remain very hot and dry, accompanied by gusty or dust-raising winds during the afternoon hours. Similarly, Balochistan is forecasted to experience hot and dry conditions with gusty winds. The plains of Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa are also likely to face intense heat.
Isolated Rain and Thunderstorms in Northern Regions
While the majority of the country will endure dry conditions, the PMD forecasts rain and thunderstorms in the upper parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, including areas like Murree, Galliyat, Chitral, Dir, Swat, Kohistan, Batagram, and Shangla. A shallow westerly trough is expected to affect these regions during the evening and night, bringing rain, wind, and thunderstorms
Parts of Gilgit-Baltistan are also predicted to experience similar weather patterns, with light rain and thunderstorms expected in isolated locations.
Temperature Extremes
The heat is expected to be particularly intense in the southern regions. Jacobabad has been recorded as the hottest city in the country, with temperatures soaring up to 44°C. Other cities like Turbat have also experienced high temperatures, reaching 43°C.(
In contrast, the northern areas are likely to experience more moderate temperatures. For instance, Gilgit is expected to have a high of 23°C, providing a cooler respite from the intense heat prevalent in other parts of the country
Public Advisory
The PMD advises the public to take necessary precautions to mitigate the effects of the heatwave. Residents in the affected regions are urged to stay hydrated, avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight, and take breaks in shaded or air-conditioned areas. Additionally, those in northern areas should remain vigilant for sudden weather changes, including rain and thunderstorms, and take appropriate safety measures.(
For the latest weather updates and advisories, the public is encouraged to monitor official PMD communications and local news outlets.
