ISLAMABAD (PEN) : The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has confirmed that Iran’s primary uranium enrichment site at Natanz was among the targets struck in a recent military operation, intensifying already high tensions between Israel and Iran.
IAEA Confirms Natanz Among Targets
Rafael Grossi, Director-General of the IAEA, stated on Friday that the agency is “closely monitoring the deeply concerning situation in Iran” and is maintaining communication with Iranian authorities and onsite inspectors. “The Agency can confirm Natanz site among targets,” Grossi said, adding that radiation levels are being assessed to determine any potential nuclear safety implications.
Netanyahu’s “Operation Rising Lion”
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu earlier announced that “Operation Rising Lion” targeted Iran’s key nuclear infrastructure, including the Natanz enrichment facility, nuclear scientists, and crucial elements of the country’s ballistic missile program.
Located about 250 kilometers south of Tehran, Natanz is the cornerstone of Iran’s nuclear program, housing thousands of centrifuges essential for uranium enrichment. The facility has been under international scrutiny due to concerns that Iran’s nuclear ambitions may extend beyond civilian energy purposes—a claim Iran denies.
Assessing Damage and Safety
While the IAEA has not yet detected abnormal radiation levels, ongoing evaluations aim to gauge the full extent of the damage and its implications for nuclear material security. “We are continuing to gather information to understand the full extent of the damage, if any, and its implications for the safety and security of nuclear material in the country,” the agency noted.
Iranian state media acknowledged that multiple sites were targeted in the strikes but have not provided detailed information on damage or casualties at Natanz.
Rising Regional Tensions
The strike represents one of the most significant assaults on Iranian nuclear infrastructure in recent years. It comes amid a backdrop of increasing hostility between Israel and Iran, including covert operations and mutual accusations related to missile and nuclear development.
Diplomatic sources indicate that the UN Security Council is expected to hold an emergency session soon to address the escalating situation. Global calls for restraint and diplomatic engagement continue as the risk of broader conflict in the volatile Middle East grows.
