ISLAMABAD (PEN) : In response to the ongoing military confrontations between Iran and Israel, Pakistani authorities have successfully repatriated over 1,000 Pakistani nationals from Iran and Iraq. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in collaboration with Iraqi Airways and local immigration officials, has coordinated these efforts to ensure the safety and well-being of its citizens.
Repatriation Efforts via Taftan Border
On June 16, 2025, approximately 714 Pakistani nationals entered Pakistan through the Taftan border crossing in Chagai District. Among them were 214 students, who were transported from Tehran via buses. Upon arrival, the students underwent immigration procedures before being relocated to Pakistan House for further assistance. The remaining individuals included traders, drivers, and other citizens seeking to return home amid the escalating conflict.
The repatriation process commenced following the onset of hostilities between Iran and Israel on June 13, 2025. The conflict has led to significant casualties on both sides, with over 220 reported deaths in Iran and at least 21 in Israel. The violence has also resulted in widespread infrastructure damage and mass evacuations, particularly from Tehran.
Airlifts from Iraq
In addition to the overland repatriations, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs facilitated the return of 268 Pakistani nationals from Iraq. Two special flights operated by Iraqi Airways arrived safely in Karachi and Islamabad, respectively, on June 16. The Foreign Office has advised all Pakistani nationals currently in Iraq to maintain contact with the Pakistan Embassy in Baghdad and their respective airlines to receive timely updates on their travel arrangements.
Border Closures and Travel Advisories
In light of the regional instability, the Balochistan government has temporarily closed all border crossings with Iran in Panjgur, Gwadar, and Kech. The Ministry of Interior has also issued advisories urging Pakistani citizens to avoid traveling to Iran due to the ongoing conflict. Despite these closures, the Taftan border crossing remains operational, with authorities confirming that cross-border trade and passenger movement continue as usual.
Ongoing Diplomatic Engagement
The Pakistani government continues to monitor the situation closely and remains committed to facilitating the safe and orderly return of all Pakistani nationals from the affected regions. Citizens are encouraged to stay informed through official channels and adhere to travel advisories to ensure their safety.
