ISLAMABAD (PEN) : Pakistan and the European Union held the fifth round of their Dialogue on Non-Proliferation and Disarmament, engaging in wide-ranging discussions on international and regional peace, security, and strategic stability, according to a press release from Pakistan’s Foreign Office on Friday.
The meeting took place in Islamabad on June 12, with senior officials from both sides leading the deliberations.
High-Level Delegations Address Arms Control and Emerging Threats
Pakistan’s delegation was led by Ambassador Tahir Andrabi, Additional Foreign Secretary for Arms Control, Disarmament, and International Security (ACDIS). Representing the European Union was Ambassador Stephan Klement, the EU Special Envoy for Non-Proliferation and Disarmament.
The dialogue covered several aspects of disarmament and non-proliferation, focusing in particular on topics under discussion at the United Nations General Assembly’s First Committee and the Conference on Disarmament. The two parties also reviewed obligations and developments related to key international treaties, including the Biological Weapons Convention (BWC) and the Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC).
Focus on Export Controls and Emerging Technologies
In addition to conventional arms control topics, both sides examined the implications of emerging technologies on global and regional security dynamics. Recent trends in export control regimes and their impact on strategic stability were also discussed, reflecting a shared concern over the evolving nature of global threats.
A Platform for Continued Strategic Engagement
The Pakistan–EU Dialogue on Non-Proliferation and Disarmament forms a key component of the broader strategic relationship between the two sides. Both delegations reaffirmed the importance of the forum as a mechanism for constructive engagement on security-related issues.
“The two sides recognized \[the dialogue] as a vital platform for constructive engagement on security and stability and on arms control, disarmament, and non-proliferation issues,” said the Foreign Office.
While recent reports suggest that broader EU-Pakistan engagements under the EU-Pakistan Forum have been paused, this latest dialogue underscores continued cooperation on critical international security matters.
The next round of discussions is expected to further enhance mutual understanding and reinforce commitments to global peace and strategic stability.
