ISLAMABAD (PEN) : Islamabad credits former U.S. President with defusing 2025 crisis through back-channel diplomacy
The government of Pakistan has formally nominated former U.S. President Donald J. Trump for the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize, citing his “decisive diplomatic engagement” during the recent India-Pakistan military standoff as instrumental in averting a large-scale regional conflict.
In an official statement released on the government’s verified X account, Islamabad praised Trump’s behind-the-scenes mediation efforts, calling them “a turning point that helped prevent a full-scale war between two nuclear-armed states.”
“President Trump demonstrated great strategic foresight and stellar statesmanship by engaging both Islamabad and New Delhi at a critical moment. His efforts led to a ceasefire that averted a catastrophic conflict,” the statement read.
Trump Credited with De-escalating 2025 India-Pakistan Crisis
The 2025 crisis, described by Pakistani officials as triggered by “unprovoked and unlawful Indian aggression,” resulted in significant casualties and prompted Pakistan to launch Operation Bunyan-un-Marsoos — a military response Islamabad called “measured and precise,” aimed at restoring deterrence without escalating to total war.
Amid rising tensions and growing fears of a regional catastrophe, Pakistan attributes the breakthrough in negotiations to Trump’s private diplomatic outreach, which it says “broke the deadlock” and ultimately led to a mutually agreed ceasefire.
“This intervention is a testament to President Trump’s role as a genuine peacemaker and his commitment to resolving conflicts through dialogue,” Islamabad stated.
Kashmir Dispute Highlighted
The government also commended Trump’s longstanding interest in mediating the decades-old Kashmir conflict between India and Pakistan. The statement said his diplomatic efforts reflect “a sincere commitment to durable peace in South Asia.”
Islamabad reiterated that lasting peace in the region remains unlikely without the resolution of the Kashmir issue in accordance with United Nations Security Council resolutions.
Trump Reacts: “They Should Give Me the Nobel”
The announcement from Pakistan came shortly after Trump reiterated his claim of having prevented war between India and Pakistan during an interaction with the media.
“I should get the Nobel Prize for stopping the Pakistan-India war,” Trump said.
“They should give me the Nobel Prize for Rwanda and… Congo, or you could say Serbia, Kosovo… The big one is India and Pakistan. I should have gotten it four or five times. But they only give it to liberals.”
The former president has repeatedly criticized what he calls bias in the Nobel Committee’s selection process, while maintaining that his global conflict resolution efforts deserve greater recognition.
Global Reactions Awaited
Pakistan’s unprecedented nomination of a former U.S. president — particularly one as polarizing as Trump — for the Nobel Peace Prize is expected to spark international debate, especially given the complex geopolitical dynamics of South Asia.
The 2026 Nobel Peace Prize nominations will be reviewed by the Norwegian Nobel Committee, with the recipient scheduled to be announced in October next year.
