ISLAMABAD (PEN) : Iran has experienced a widespread internet blackout lasting more than 60 hours, significantly restricting public access to global online platforms and services, according to digital rights monitoring organization NetBlocks.
The prolonged outage, which began earlier this week, has effectively disconnected many Iranians from international websites and hindered their ability to communicate freely, express political opinions, and receive critical safety information.
“The internet shutdown continues to severely limit the public’s ability to express political viewpoints, communicate freely, and follow safety alerts,” NetBlocks said in an official statement on Saturday.
Authorities Cite Cyberattack Threats
While Iranian authorities have not released detailed information regarding the internet disruption, officials in Tehran have linked the shutdown to escalating threats of Israeli cyberattacks. They have justified the restrictions as necessary measures to safeguard the country’s national infrastructure from potential sabotage.
This development underscores the growing tensions in the region, with cybersecurity emerging as a critical front in the ongoing geopolitical rivalry.
