ISLAMABAD (PEN) : Iran has declared its intention to respond to recent U.S. military strikes on its nuclear facilities, calling the attacks unlawful and a clear breach of international norms. The statement was delivered during an emergency session of the UN Security Council on Monday.
Iran Condemns “Premeditated” Attacks
Iran’s UN Ambassador, Amir Saeid Iravani, condemned the strikes on Isfahan, Natanz, and Fordow, stating: “Iran retains its complete and lawful right to respond to this blatant act of aggression.” He described the strikes as “premeditated and unprovoked,” warning that Tehran would act under Article 51 of the UN Charter, which permits self-defense following an armed attack.
“The Islamic Republic of Iran is an independent and peace-seeking nation,” Iravani said, adding that Washington’s actions were another “shameful chapter” in U.S. history. He also accused the U.S. and Israel of coordinated aggression, claiming the strikes were part of a joint military effort that has resulted in the deaths of over 400 civilians.
Global Reactions: Condemnation from Major Powers
Russia: “Humiliation of the International Community”
Russian Ambassador Vasily Nebenzya denounced the strikes as “provocative and irresponsible,” stating: “The attacks constitute a complete humiliation of the international community.” He criticized certain Security Council members for remaining silent and questioned the imbalance in global nuclear oversight, pointing to Israel’s non-signatory status to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty.
China: Violation of International Law
China’s UN representative Fu Cong called the U.S. airstrikes a “grave breach” of international law and a serious threat to the global non-proliferation framework. “The actions of the United States constitute a dangerous violation of the UN Charter, international law, and Iran’s sovereignty,” he said.
Pakistan: Urges Immediate Ceasefire
Pakistan’s envoy, Iftikhar Ahmad, also condemned the attacks, calling for an “unconditional ceasefire” and a return to diplomatic dialogue. “We urge Council members to endorse a draft resolution that demands an immediate ceasefire without preconditions and a return to meaningful talks,” he added.
Ceasefire Resolution and Diplomatic Push
Behind closed doors, diplomats confirmed that negotiations on a proposed UN resolution for a ceasefire were ongoing late into Monday night. Iran has not yet launched a retaliatory strike but has indicated that its response will be “appropriate.”
UN Chief Calls for De-escalation
While UN Secretary-General António Guterres has not issued a formal statement, his spokesperson reiterated the urgent need for restraint. “De-escalation, respect for international law, and protection of civilians must be immediate priorities,” the spokesperson said.
