ISLAMABAD (PEN) : At a United Nations Security Council session focused on the 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador *Asim Iftikhar Ahmad*, reaffirmed Islamabad’s commitment to finding a diplomatic solution to the Iran nuclear issue. He emphasized that “dialogue and diplomacy remain the only practical way forward.”
Pakistan Backs Ceasefire Efforts
Ambassador Ahmad voiced strong support for the recently announced ceasefire between Iran and Israel, calling it a critical opportunity to rekindle constructive diplomacy. “Pakistan stands fully behind efforts to restore calm and avoid actions that could lead to more fighting, and we strongly support a lasting ceasefire in the region,” he asserted.
Upholding International Law and IAEA’s Role
Highlighting concerns over military incidents affecting nuclear facilities, Ahmad cautioned that such attacks have violated international law and disrupted the *IAEA’s verification mandate*. “That view was still there out back in play with the negotiations between Iran and the United States facilitated by Oman, till it was violently disrupted by the unlawful and illegal military attacks on the IAEA‑safeguarded Iranian nuclear facilities,” he noted. He urged that the IAEA be allowed to operate unhindered.
Advocacy for JCPOA Renewal
Ambassador Ahmad also highlighted Islamabad’s active diplomatic channels, stating Pakistan’s position has been consistent throughout the crisis. He reiterated the nation’s backing for the revival of the JCPOA—or a comparable agreement acceptable to all stakeholders—before its scheduled expiration in October 2025. “We reaffirm our support for the resolution of the Iran nuclear issue through peaceful means, diplomatic engagement and sustained dialogue,” he said.
Call for Restraint and Continued Engagement
Closing his remarks, Ahmad appealed to all nations to exercise restraint and keep diplomatic avenues open. “This is the time for calm heads and serious dialogue, not more confrontation,” he affirmed.
In underscoring a rule-based resolution anchored in the UN Charter and international law, Pakistan remains steadfast in advocating a peaceful and negotiated end to the Iran nuclear impasse.
