ISLAMABAD (PEN) : Federal Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi has called for nationwide sectarian harmony and reinforced security measures during the upcoming month of Muharram, underscoring the importance of unity and vigilance to maintain peace across the country.
High-Level Review of Security Preparedness
Chairing a top-level meeting in Islamabad, Naqvi reviewed administrative and security arrangements for Muharram-related events. The session was attended by Minister of State for Interior Talal Chaudhry, senior officials from the Ministry of Interior, Deputy Commissioner (DC) Islamabad, Assistant Commissioners, and top-ranking police officials including DIGs and SPs.
Officials briefed the minister that 181 religious processions and 965 majalis (religious gatherings) are scheduled to take place in the federal capital during Muharram. A comprehensive security audit of all venues has already been completed.
Key Directives: Technology, Surveillance, Coordination
Naqvi directed authorities to implement strict security protocols at all entry and exit points of religious processions and gatherings. He announced the setup of a centralized control room at the Safe City headquarters to oversee and coordinate security operations in real-time.
He emphasized the deployment of multi-layered security perimeters, geo-tagging of sensitive locations, and effective traffic management strategies. The use of modern surveillance technologies and social media monitoring were also highlighted as essential components to counter misinformation and hate speech.
Support for Law Enforcement Personnel
The interior minister instructed that duty officers be rotated to maintain alertness and efficiency throughout Muharram. He also directed that adequate food and logistical support be provided to security personnel deployed across the capital.
Appeal for Religious Harmony and Code Compliance
Urging strict enforcement of the officially sanctioned code of conduct, Naqvi appealed to religious leaders and communities of all sects to work in close coordination with the government. He stressed that the shared goal is to prevent any disruption by anti-state or extremist elements.
“We must all work together to ensure Muharram is observed peacefully. Unity and coordination are vital to thwart any efforts to incite unrest,” said Minister Naqvi.
As preparations intensify for Muharram, the federal government is focusing on proactive coordination, surveillance, and public cooperation to maintain religious harmony and national security during this sensitive period.
