ISLAMABAD (PEN) : In a statement marking Parliamentarism Day, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif emphasized the critical importance of fortifying democratic structures and ensuring that citizens’ voices guide legislative action.
Strengthening Parliamentary Governance
Prime Minister Sharif remarked,
“The International Day of Parliamentarism, observed every year on June 30, reaffirms our global commitment to strengthening democratic institutions.”
He highlighted Parliament’s foundational functions, underlining its capacity to ensure transparency and oversight via standing committees. The prime minister reaffirmed that the Constitution supports women’s representation through reserved seats outlined in Articles 51 and 59.
He added:
“Our women parliamentarians have also risen to leadership positions: currently, eight women Senators and four women Members of the National Assembly serve as Chairpersons of Parliamentary Committees, breaking glass ceilings and setting an example of inclusive and empowered leadership.”
Promoting Inclusivity and Innovation
Shehbaz Sharif underscored the importance of inclusive policymaking, noting the collaborative nature of budget preparation for the 2025–26 fiscal year:
“Inclusivity has also guided our approach to governance. While preparing the Federal Budget for FY 2025–26, the government actively consulted coalition partners and welcomed contributions from across the political spectrum. This inclusive spirit is the bedrock of a healthy democracy.”
He also lauded the proactive use of technology to boost parliamentary transparency and participation:
“Recognising the evolving needs of modern governance, we have also embraced technology to improve parliamentary transparency and accessibility.”
Global Engagement and Legislative Impact
The prime minister commended Parliament’s active role in international parliamentary diplomacy. He noted that Pakistani legislators have advocated for peace and cooperation through platforms like the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), particularly following recent regional tensions—projects aimed at projecting Pakistan’s perspective worldwide.
He concluded with a pledge to renew national dedication to democratic values:
“As we mark this important day, let us renew our resolve to strengthen parliamentary institutions, safeguard democratic values, and ensure that the voices of the citizenry are truly reflected in the lawmaking process.”
