ISLAMABAD (PEN) : President Asif Ali Zardari has praised the Parliament of Pakistan for its ongoing efforts to foster inclusive, transparent, and participatory governance, reaffirming its central role in upholding democratic values.
The president issued the remarks in a statement commemorating the International Day of Parliamentarism, observed annually on June 30. The day marks a global recognition of the significance of legislative institutions in promoting democracy and public accountability.
Parliament: A Pillar of Democracy
“Today, we observe the International Day of Parliamentarism, reaffirming our commitment to upholding the principles of democracy, freedom, inclusivity, tolerance, and socio-economic justice,” President Zardari said in his message.
He emphasized the importance of parliamentary institutions in ensuring good governance. “Parliament is the sovereign representative of the people and the guardian of constitutional values. It plays an important role in shaping national policy, ensuring transparency and accountability, and defending the fundamental rights and freedoms of all citizens,” he stated.
Legislative Oversight and Public Welfare
The president highlighted the role of effective legislation and oversight in improving service delivery and strengthening democratic institutions. “Through effective legislation and oversight, Parliament can help improve public service delivery, enhance governance, and strengthen democratic institutions,” he noted.
Zardari further reiterated the legislature’s duty to protect democratic ideals and work toward sustainable national development. “The legislature holds the responsibility of protecting democratic ideals and advancing national development,” he said.
A Call to Strengthen Democracy
Concluding his message, the president expressed confidence in Parliament’s ongoing commitment to the people. “The Parliament of Pakistan will continue to legislate for the welfare of our people, defend their rights and freedoms, and provide effective oversight to ensure public accountability,” he said. “Let us build a Pakistan where democracy flourishes, institutions are strong, and every citizen’s voice is heard and respected.”
