ISLAMABAD (PEN) : Veteran Australian batter *Steve Smith* is poised to make his return to the national squad ahead of the *second Test against the West Indies*, after recovering from a finger injury using an unexpected and innovative method.
Smith, 35, had been sidelined after suffering a *compound dislocation in his right little finger* during the *World Test Championship final at Lord’s*. Initially ruled out of the first Test, the former captain has now resumed full training without surgery, thanks to a unique rehabilitation routine undertaken during a trip to the United States.
Baseball Cages and Creative Rehab
While in New York, Smith opted for baseball batting cage sessions to aid his recovery. “*I started with tennis balls and soft cricket balls. By the second session, I was facing hard balls. I sent footage back to the medical staff in Barbados and they were pleased with the progress*,” Smith told reporters.
After having his stitches removed, Smith switched to a thinner splint that allowed for more flexibility. “*It feels like normal training for me now. There’s no real pain. The splint limits movement slightly, but I’ve got good range back and I’m hitting the ball well*,” he added.
Ready to Bat, Cautious About Fielding
While Smith appears match-ready with the bat, he acknowledged fielding may still pose a challenge due to his limited finger mobility. “*Fielding in front of the wicket will probably be the strangest thing. I’ve never done that in a Test. I might be at mid-on, mid-off, or fine leg—definitely different from slip*,” he said.
Likely Return for Grenada Test
Smith is widely tipped to reclaim his spot at *number four* for the *second Test starting July 3 in St. George’s, Grenada*, although the final team selection is still pending. Insiders suggest his progress and current fitness make his inclusion highly probable.
Australia, currently leading the *two-match series 1-0, dominated the West Indies in the first Test with a **159-run win*, and will look to complete a series sweep.
Support for New-Look Batting Line-up
Smith also voiced support for Australia’s emerging batting talent, including debutant *Sam Konstas. “These guys are good players. There’s been a lot of talk, but they just need time and opportunity. It doesn’t always click right away—my first Test hundred came in my 12th match. They’ve got talent and bright futures*,” he said.
