ISLAMABAD (PEN) : As cloudy skies brought brief relief from the scorching summer heat on Tuesday, the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has forecast heavier-than-usual monsoon rains for Karachi in the coming weeks.
According to PMD Deputy Director Anjum Nazir Zaigham, the city is expected to experience its second spell of monsoon showers beginning July 8, which may bring light to moderate rainfall initially but could intensify later in the month.
“This year’s monsoon activity is projected to be above normal,” said Zaigham. “The second phase is likely to begin from July 8.”
Authorities on Alert Ahead of Rain Spell
While residents welcomed the overcast skies and cooler temperatures, city authorities have begun preparations for potential urban flooding and drainage challenges. Past monsoon seasons have severely impacted Karachi’s road infrastructure and daily life, making early planning critical.
Municipal services and disaster management teams have reportedly been placed on alert, with drainage system inspections and de-silting operations underway in high-risk areas.
Monsoon Season Outlook
The PMD has issued similar warnings across other parts of Sindh, urging residents and local governments to remain vigilant. Above-normal rainfall could lead to water accumulation, traffic disruption, and strain on public utilities if not proactively managed.
This season’s first spell of monsoon rain had minimal impact in Karachi, but weather experts caution that later phases could be more intense.
Residents are advised to follow updates from the Met Office and take precautionary measures during rain forecasts.
