ISLAMABAD (PEN) : Pakistan’s Ministry of Maritime Affairs has unveiled a strategic plan to expand Gwadar Port’s operations, including the launch of new shipping lines and a direct ferry service to Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries. The move aims to enhance regional maritime connectivity and strengthen Pakistan’s role as a transshipment and logistics hub in the Arabian Sea.
Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs Muhammad Junaid Anwar Chaudhry announced the initiative during a high-level meeting held in Islamabad. The development is part of Pakistan’s broader efforts under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) and aligns with China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI).
Strengthening Trade and Connectivity
“The expansion of Gwadar Port operations will not only strengthen Pakistan’s maritime trade capacity but also enhance regional connectivity, particularly with Central Asia and the Middle East,” said Minister Chaudhry in an official statement.
A key component of the plan is the introduction of a passenger and cargo ferry service between Gwadar and GCC countries. The service aims to provide a cost-effective and efficient transportation link for trade and travelers alike.
Strategic Gateway Under CPEC
Located in Balochistan province, Gwadar Port is a central feature of CPEC, which connects Pakistan’s southwestern coast to China’s Xinjiang region via a vast network of roads, energy projects, and trade infrastructure. Launched in 2013, the initiative seeks to facilitate trade between China, South Asia, the Middle East, and Central Asia.
The new expansion plan emphasizes Pakistan’s vision to integrate more deeply into regional supply chains, reduce transportation costs, and provide alternative trade routes for landlocked Central Asian countries.
Ongoing Investments and Infrastructure Upgrades
Officials noted that continued investments in port infrastructure, digitalization of operations, and improved road connectivity are crucial for Gwadar’s development. These enhancements are expected to elevate Gwadar’s position in South Asia’s maritime and trade ecosystem.
The Ministry of Maritime Affairs reaffirmed its commitment to transforming Gwadar into a modern, fully operational port that supports both national economic growth and regional integration.
