ISLAMABAD (PEN) : A powerful roadside explosion in Khar Tehsil of Bajaur district killed four individuals, including Assistant Commissioner Nawagai and Tehsildar Waqil Khan, and injured at least 11 others, officials confirmed on Wednesday.
Officials Targeted Near Sadiqueabad Crossing
The blast occurred near the Sadiqueabad crossing close to the Phatak Mela area when an improvised explosive device (IED) detonated beside a double-cabin vehicle transporting senior local officials and police personnel. The IED was reportedly planted near the road and remotely triggered as the convoy passed.
According to hospital sources, among the deceased were Assistant Commissioner Nawagai, Tehsildar Waqil Khan, a police subedar, and a constable. Emergency responders swiftly transferred the injured—some critically wounded—to Khar Hospital for urgent treatment.
Security Response and Investigation Underway
Rescue teams and security forces rushed to the blast site, launched evacuation efforts, and cordoned off the area to secure the vicinity. A search operation was immediately initiated to trace those responsible for the attack.
Authorities have not yet released any statements regarding responsibility for the bombing.
Rise in Violence Across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa
The incident comes amid a renewed wave of militant violence across the province. According to a recent report by a national think tank tracking terrorism trends, June 2025 witnessed 78 terrorist attacks carried out by the group “Fitna Al-Hindustan,” resulting in 100 fatalities and 189 injuries nationwide.
The report also stated that in response to these attacks, security forces killed 71 militants and arrested 52 suspects during counter-terror operations last month.
National Toll of Terror Incidents in 2025
In the first half of 2025 alone, Pakistan has experienced 502 terrorist incidents, leading to 737 deaths and nearly 1,000 injuries, the report noted. Targets have included security personnel, public places, and key government facilities.
Efforts continue to intensify across affected regions as authorities vow to improve the security landscape and eradicate militant networks.
