ISLAMABAD (PEN) : Authorities in Karachi have significantly ramped up security measures and issued a detailed traffic plan ahead of major Muharram processions set to take place on the 8th, 9th, and 10th of Muharram-ul-Haram (July 4–6).
Key Routes Sealed and Commercial Areas Closed
As part of precautionary efforts, containers have been placed at key entry points in Saddar and along MA Jinnah Road, effectively sealing off access to critical junctions. Commercial areas including Empress Market and Preedy Street have also been shut temporarily.
Officials confirmed that the main Ashura procession will proceed along its traditional route—from Nishtar Park to Hussainian Iranian Imambargah—with a substantial security presence deployed throughout.
Traffic Diversion Plan Announced
The Karachi Traffic Police have released a comprehensive traffic management strategy. MA Jinnah Road will remain closed from Guru Mandir to Tower for three consecutive days due to security concerns.
Alternate routes advised for commuters include:
Nazimabad residents: Take Lasbela Chowk through Garden to reach Nishtar Park.
Liaquatabad traffic: Turn right at Teen Hatti and continue via Martin Road.
Hassan Square travelers: Use Jail Flyover to reach Society Light Signal or Lasbela Chowk via Nishtar Road.
Federal Holiday and Security Coordination
The federal government has declared July 5 and 6 as public holidays to mark Youm-e-Ashura, the 10th day of Muharram commemorating the martyrdom of Hazrat Imam Hussain (RA) in the Battle of Karbala.
The Sindh Home Department has requested a suspension of mobile phone services on the 10th of Muharram, citing potential security threats. Approval from the federal Ministry of Interior is pending.
Additionally, the federal government has authorized the deployment of the Pakistan Army and Civil Armed Forces across the country, including in Karachi, to support provincial law enforcement agencies. These deployments fall under Sections 4 and 5 of the Anti-Terrorism Act, 1997, and will be determined by local threat assessments.
Nationwide Observance Under Tight Security
Muharram, one of the holiest months in Islam, sees nationwide mourning and processions. Religious leaders are delivering sermons to large gatherings under heavy security as provincial and federal bodies work in coordination to ensure public safety.
