ISLAMABAD (PEN) : Authorities at Tarbela Dam have opened all spillways to manage the rapid increase in water inflows caused by ongoing monsoon rains. A formal flood alert has been issued for low-lying areas downstream as the Indus River swells to a medium-level flood.
According to the Tarbela Dam administration, the spillway gates have been opened up to 14 feet to safely discharge excess water. Officials have warned the public, especially residents near the river and visiting tourists, to avoid spillway zones and riverbanks for their safety.
Indus River Flow Rises Sharply
The current discharge of water from the dam into the Indus River downstream is approximately *259,000 cusecs, and officials expect this level to persist for the next **five to six hours*.
“Villages and low-lying settlements along the Abaseen (Indus River) face potential flooding risks,” stated an official notice. Local residents have been urged to stay vigilant, while rescue and monitoring teams remain on alert.
Precautionary Measures and Public Advisory
With floodwaters rising, authorities have intensified surveillance and instructed local administrations to prepare for emergency response. The public has been advised not to approach water channels, spillways, or flood-prone zones until conditions stabilize.
The situation is being monitored continuously by the Tarbela Dam management in coordination with local disaster response teams.
