ISLAMABAD (PEN) : China reiterated the one-China principle and opposition to any kind of external interference on the Taiwan question on Wednesday as a response to a U.S. official’s recent claim about the region’s legal status.
Chen Binhua, spokesperson for China’s State Council Taiwan Affairs Office, said at a news briefing that there is only one China in the world and Taiwan is an alienable part of the Chinese territory, adding that the Taiwan question is purely China’s internal affair and no external force will be allowed to interfere.
“We urge the U.S. side to abide by the one-China principle and the three China-U.S. joint communiques with concrete actions, fulfil its commitment not to support ‘Taiwan independence,’ and stop sending any wrong signals to the separatist forces,” said Chen.
He added that the U.S. only looks out for its own interests and more and more people on the island have realized that the U.S. is unreliable and “Taiwan independence” is a dead end.
“It’s so-called ‘supporting Taiwan’ is actually damaging and destroying Taiwan,” Chen said.
In November, an annual survey published by the Institute of European and American Studies at Academia Sinica revealed that confidence in the U.S. among the people in Taiwan had dropped by 11 percent, and only 34 percent of people in Taiwan agreed that the U.S. was a “trustworthy” country.
