ISLAMABAD (PEN) : Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan has prevented the return of party members who had left until his release from prison. This decision follows the violent protests of May 9, 2023, where several PTI leaders announced their departure amidst a crackdown due to inflammatory speeches and attacks on state installations.
Ahead of the February 8 elections, reports surfaced that some of these former members wished to rejoin PTI, but the party leadership has firmly stated they will not accept any returnees.
Former Prime Minister’s directive led to the formation of a seven-member committee tasked with deciding the fate of those seeking to return to PTI. The committee, chaired by PTI Vice Chairman Shah Mahmood Qureshi, includes Asad Qaiser, Hamid Khan, Shehryar Afridi, Barrister Gohar, and Shibli Faraz, according to sources.
The committee is responsible for compiling a final list of names for PTI founder Imran Khan’s consideration in making decisions regarding their return. Additionally, Shandana Gulzar will handle matters concerning PTI women’s cases and the reasons behind leaders leaving the party.
