ISLAMABAD (PEN) : The central moon sighting authority will convene in Quetta on July 6 to observe the crescent moon of Muharram, marking the beginning of the new Islamic calendar.
Chairing the meeting will be Maulana Abdul Khabir Azad, Chairman of the Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee. Concurrently, zonal committees in Karachi, Islamabad, Lahore, and Peshawar will also convene on the same day for the sighting.
This year, Muharram 9 and 10 are anticipated to fall on July 16 and 17, respectively, which are Tuesday and Wednesday. The holy month of Muharram is expected to commence on July 8 in Pakistan, leading to the observation of Youm-e-Ashur (Day of Ashura) on July 17.
Ashura is solemnly observed nationwide to commemorate Hazrat Imam Hussain (R.A) and other martyrs of Karbala. Public holidays were traditionally announced by the federal government for Muharram 9 and 10 in Pakistan to honor Ashura.
