ISLAMABAD (PEN) : Another tragic incident has claimed the life of Japanese climber Onishi Hiroshi, who fell into a crevasse while descending from Spantik Peak, also known as Golden Peak, in the Gilgit-Baltistan district of Nagar region.
Deputy Commissioner Nagar, Attaur Rehman Kakar, confirmed the unfortunate event, stating that Hiroshi, aged 64, was part of a four-member Japanese team accompanied by two porters. They had successfully reached the 7,027-meter summit on July 1 but encountered the accident during their descent on July 2. Hiroshi’s body was recovered and brought to camp on July 3.
This incident follows another tragedy involving Japanese climbers last month, where one climber was found deceased on a mountain in northern areas. The search continues for the second climber.
Spantik Peak, situated in the Karakoram Range, is considered a relatively accessible peak but still presents challenges, as evidenced by these recent events in the mountaineering community.
