ISLAMABAD (PEN) : The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) spokesperson on Wednesday detailed actions taken against non-filers across Pakistan.
Speaking to ARY News, the FBR spokesperson revealed that telecom companies had blocked 230,000 Subscriber Identity Modules (SIMs) of non-filers based on the FBR’s recommendation.
Out of these, 76,636 SIMs were unblocked after the submission of tax returns.
The spokesperson stated that the FBR is providing data on 5,000 individuals daily to the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) for SIM blockage.
In response to a question, he clarified that SIMs are blocked before any investigation is conducted.
On June 25, the FBR addressed the issue of filers and non-filers, a hot topic especially after the presentation of the 2024-25 budget.
Exclusively speaking to ARY News, the FBR spokesperson stated that out of a population of 250 million, only 2.5 million are non-filers.
He reassured that household women and CNIC-holder students should not worry, as they are not considered non-filers. Non-filers are those who do not file their tax returns despite having taxable income.
Bakhtiar mentioned that the FBR would forward a list to the FIA to prevent non-filers from flying abroad.
The federal government has proposed heavy taxes and other measures in the 2024-25 budget for non-filers.
